The Concept of Capsule
We created Capsule to fill a gap in the construction process that nobody talks about — the moment between approved floor plan and contractor execution when the finish decisions have to be made. Homeowners who may not have envisioned working with an interior designer suddenly realize that the pressure is on them to provide this critical direction to their builder. The decision list is long, and the clock is ticking. But they’re worried it’s too late for expert guidance.
We realized something - the key strengths we bring to our full-service design process at SFD could be leveraged to create a new, focused service model centered around finish selection. Hard surfaces have always been our native language. Stone, tile, plaster, plumbing, millwork - these are the architectural bones of a finished interior, and we’re as passionate about them as we are about the soft furnishings. We're also known for documentation that leaves nothing to interpretation — drawing sets and spec lists precise enough that we can hand off to a contractor and trust the execution completely. So we know that your Capsule will be a rock solid roadmap to the finish.
About SFD
Stephanie Freeman Design is a Boston-based residential interior design studio specializing in large-scale renovation projects. We work at the intersection of space planning, interior architecture, and material selection — collaborating closely with contractors and builders to bring unique, considered, technically precise interiors to life.
We're known for range. Where many studios have a signature aesthetic, our process begins by identifying the visual language that speaks to our clients, and building from there. The result is spaces that feel personal and coherent, modern without being cold, and designed to hold their character over time.
Stephanie founded SFD in 2017, drawing on a decade in marketing, formal training in Interior Design and Interior Architecture at UC Berkeley, and years working across San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston — three cities whose design cultures she continues to pull from in equal measure. Her approach is bold but grounded, and her collaborators consistently describe her as a detail-oriented designer with a candid and solution-oriented presence on every project.
